Meaning: Information sign for the dormitory of the temple CHI ON in Kyoto.
The lettering on both sides has been stressed a little more on one side (weather side).

Japanese billboards

Elaborately carved billboards or signboards shaped the streetscape of old Japan. They can still be admired, especially in restored streets.
Design and form were often realized with the inclusion of a beautiful wood grain.
The craft of the wood carver is not yet extinct. To this day, this type of plaque is newly made and used.
